Etna: Wonderful little town with a great mico brewery and an old fashioned soda fountain. Ended up taking the best part of a zero day to rest my knee, load up on calories and enjoy the hospitality of Dave and Vicky at Alderbrook Manor/Hiker Hut
Marble Mountains: Lots of snow, gorgeous views and a bone chilling early morning dip in Paradise Lake. The things I do to cleanse my chi! Have the distinct feeling that the increase in snowy conditions may be a sign of things to come in Oregon.
Bill Roberts: I was fortunate to meet and chat with PCT legend, Bill Roberts, who has helped maintain trails around the Seiad Valley area for the best part of four decades. Interesting fellow with lots of great stories.
Nothing major. I did lose my head lamp, which had been with me for more than 10,000 miles. Hopefully it will find a good home with another PCT hiker.
NOTES & MUSINGS:
California Dreaming: After 1698 trail miles I finally said adios to California and hello to Oregon. Five favourite songs with ‘California’ in the title: Californication ( Red Hot Chilli Peppers); California Sun (Ramones); California Dreaming (Mama’s and Papa’s); California Girls ( Beach Boys), and Hotel California (The Eagles). Oregon may be a toughie on the favourite song front.
To attend or not to attend…….that is the question : Despite an early arrival into town, I chose to forgo attending a performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival; something I’d been looking forward to for weeks. Instead, I decided my time would be more productively spent rehabbing my knee, devouring multiple bowls of Callahan’s excellent pasta and sampling a drop or two of the none-too-shabby Ashland Amber.
