CDT – Days 53 to 56 – San Juan’s

DATE:  September 24 to 2720120927-114757.jpg

START:  Spring Creek Pass/Lake City

FINISH:  Wolf Creek Pass/Pagosa Springs

DISTANCE:  115.3 miles (185.6 km)

DAILY AVERAGE:  28.8 miles (46.4 km)

TOTAL DISTANCE:  1904.5 miles (3064.3 km)

Major Route Choice # 3: San Juan’s or Creede Cutoff? No-brainer. Generally, the only reason southbound hikers take the latter option is weather related, i.e. they arrive too late in the season and choose not to deal with the possibility/reality of heavy snowfall.

San Juan Blues: Four long days. Hail, snow, wind, white-outs and the occasional glorious window of sunshine. The scenery, at least the little I saw of it, was impressive. The temperatures? Colder than a well digger’s ass. Indeed, if John Denver had ever hiked the San Juan’s in late September, chances are he would have traded in his guitar for a surfboard, bought a one way ticket to San Diego and spent the rest of his days as a beach bum.

  1. Swami- This is Reserves (Jeff). My wife (108/Michelle) met you up in East Glacier. We were hiking a “chunk” of the CDT sobo. Anyway, we heard that you had gotten ahead of us in the Scapegoat Wilderness from some other hikers. But then we cheated and got a car in Helena and drove down to Grand Lake and started again! We just finished up our hike at Ghost Ranch last week. Not to rub it in, but we had lovely sunny weather in the San Juans 🙂 If you are on the AT this fall, shot me a note when you are in the Virginia/MD/Penn. area. We’d love to come up from DC and hike a bit or grab a beer when you are in town. OK, peace and love.

    • Hey Reserves
Great to hear from you! Congrats on your section hike……..happy to hear someone had fine weather in the San Juan’s! Looking forward to that beer once I am a little further south on the AT. Give my regards to 108.

  2. We are heading to southern Colorado, but to Valley View Hot Springs, near Salida…hope you stopped there…now that is our favorite cold weather sport….no cold feet!! Still planning on that pint in Silver City when you get there. Cheers!

    • Hey Deb and Dan,
Unfortunately didn’t make it to Valley View Hot Springs. Too many hot springs, so little time……….there may be a proverb in that.

  3. Wow, I don’t remember lakes being in this stretch. 2011 they were all buried under snow. The new dusting of snow on trail is serenely beautiful.

P.S. I thank you for the very kind voice memo you sent me. I have been meaning to respond and I will soon.

    • Hey Speedstick,
Yes, the San Juan’s were gorgeous…….well…….at least the stretches I actually saw when Mother Nature afforded me a little respite from the elements! All good fun. Hope things are going great for you up there in Bend. Give my regards to ‘Rubs’, and be sure to have a beer or two for me next time you go to that cool brewery we visited back in June.
