On August 4 and 5 I did a couple of presentations for the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) at Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire. Both talks, the 12 Long Walks and Going Lighter without Compromising Safety were well received………………at the very least no one seemed to doze off mid-presentation…………must have been the espresso coffee served with dinner.
On the morning of the 5th I went for a wander up Mt.Washington. My previous experience hiking in the White Mountains was during Hurricane Sandy last year…………this time around it was warmer, drier and a tad less blowy, however, temps on the summit were still down in the 20’s (fahrenheit). This is one seriously windy mountain range. Indeed, “the highest wind ever observed by man” was recorded on the summit of Mt.Washington in 1934; a bracing 231 miles per hour.

You do get around, don’t you? I’m picturing you flying out of Mexico City on a chartered flight to New Hampshire, giving your talks to AMC (with liberal doses of Aussie humour), climbing the Rockpile, then flying back in time for evening tequilas and colitas.
Yes, that mountain is no one’s friend, per se. Beautiful up there for a fair few days this time of year, usually. But never truly warm, and only fleetingly calm.
Alas, my mode of transport is more likely to be a broken down burro than a chartered flight! You’re not too far off the mark when it comes to the tequilas……….maybe a Bohemia or Negra Modelo to get things rolling.
