AT – Day 46 – The Priest

DATE:  December 120121209-065918.jpg

START:  Stealth site just before Skyline Drive, VA

FINISH:  Stealth site on the slopes of Cold Mt, VA

DISTANCE:  36.5 miles (58.7 km)

TOTAL DISTANCE:  1376.5 (2214.8 km)

On the scenery, social and mileage fronts today was a good one. In regards to the former, clear skies afforded me impressive views from Hanging and Chimney Rocks, as well as through the leaveless trees on the climb up The Priest. Speaking of which, I’m not sure I have ever mentioned this on the blog before, but over the years climbing has generally been the strongest part of my hiking. Feeling good, I decided to have a bit of fun and see how fast I could ascend the 3.3 mile, 3000 ft. plus climb from the trailhead to the Priest’s summit. It took me a little less than one hour and nine minutes of huffing and puffing. All things considered, not too shabby for an old timer with way too many miles on the hiking odometer!

On the social side of the backcountry spectrum, I met Bob from Pittsburgh and two separate groups of campers from Richmond, VA. Great chatting with you all, and particular thanks for both the whiskeys and Heinekens; slept like a baby, despite the cold night and a pretty ordinary campsite location.

  1. Hi Cam, We haven’t met. I have enjoyed following your hike. I am planning SOBO next June. I looked at your equipment list. Curious, did you switch to a tent or are you still using poncho tarp and bivy for shelter? How do you think this system would work in summer conditions? Seems like the bivy would be a bit hot with humidity during summer. Thanks, Doug

  2. Hey, Cam, Big congrats on finishing you Big 12 Hikes. Yesterday I backpacked from the Priest to Spy Rock. I timed myself climbing the Priest, and I did it in 2hrs and 40 minutes. Not too shabby for a 270lb (122.47 Kilos for you Aussies 😉 former offensive tackle! Have fun on your next great adventure. My next big one is coming up in the summer, hiking sequoia and Kings Canyon, can’t wait!

    1. Hey Bob,
      Thanks for the congrats.
270 lbs………..I’m glad I met you on the trail and not on the Gridiron!!
Best of luck in Sequoia and Kings……….one of the most beautiful areas in the United States!
      All the best,
      Cam
